Time.com’s TIME 100 Poll Got Served

April 28th, 2009 | Tags: , ,

I don’t know why I find it this so amusing, but it’s Tuesday, so there you go.

Time announced yesterday that the winner of their ‘TIME 100‘ on-line poll and recipient of the title “World’s Most Influential Person” was ‘moot’ – “the 21-year-old college student and founder of the online community 4chan.org, whose real name is Christopher Poole, received 16,794,368 votes and an average influence rating of 90 (out of a possible 100).”

The group ‘Anonymous’ not only made moot the winner, they arranged the top 21 so that the first letter of each name spelled out ‘Marblecake, also the game.’

Time seems to know that they were gamed and either thinks they out smarted the attempts or are too full of themselves to admit they were had.  Sayeth Time:

Moot denies knowing about any concerted plan by his followers to influence the poll, though TIME.com’s technical team did detect and extinguish several attempts to hack the vote.

If Time isn’t willing to admit they were had or doesn’t even realize that they really were had, it kind of makes me wonder about the competency of their other reporting.

In any case, here is a great summary of how ‘Anonymous’ stuck it to Time.

moot wins, Time Inc. loses « Music Machinery.
