The GOP Does the Ol’ Who’s On First Routine
The act has been in pre-production since before President Obama’s Inauguration, when Rush Limbaugh said he hoped that Obama ‘fails’. Since then, Democrats have been hammering the idea that Rush Limbaugh is the leader of the Republican Party.
D.L. Hugley got the routine going on D L Hugley Breaks the News. While talking to Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele, Hugley said, ‘Rush Limbaugh, who is the de facto leader of the Republican Party…’ Steele retorted that he, not Limbaugh, is the ‘de facto leader of the Republican Party.’ Steele hit his stride saying, ‘Rush Limbaugh is an entertainer. Rush Limbaugh… his whole thing is entertainment. Yes, it’s incendiary. Yes, it’s ugly.’
Rush Limbaugh unloaded on Michael Steele about that, saying, ‘Michael Steele, you are head of the RNC. You are not head of the Republican Party.’
It ended up with Michael Steele apologizing to Rush Limbaugh, ‘My intent was not to go after Rush – I have enormous respect for Rush Limbaugh. I was maybe a little bit inarticulate… There was no attempt on my part to diminish his voice or his leadership.’
All the while, Democrats are laughing at the two of them for their Abbot and Costello impersonation (and working on keeping the skit going).
For Rush Limbaugh, publicity is publicity, but having the Chairman of the RNC apologize to him for giving a pretty accurate description of Limbaugh’s show is GREAT publicity (and it doesn’t hurt that Democrats keep calling him the leader of the Republican Party, either). Publius, at Obsidian Wings calls it right when he says of Limbaugh,
He [Limbaugh] isn’t consciously trying to hurt the GOP through extreme statements and high-profile fights. He’s just indifferent to their effect. If they help the GOP, fine. If they don’t, that’s fine too. The key is getting attention.
For the GOP, though, it raises serious questions about just who is in charge (and leaves them looking rather inept). It seems that the public face of the GOP is Rush, although Limbaugh said on Monday, ‘I’m not in charge of the Republican Party, and I don’t want to be.‘ Steele heads the Republican National Committee, but according to Limbaugh that doesn’t make Steele the head of the Republican Party. Steele says he is in charge, but he doesn’t sound too sure. Does anyone know who is calling the shots in the GOP?
It sounds like the new Who’s On First routine goes like this:
Democrats/Media: Rush is on First.
Steele: I’m on First. Rush is over there organizing the Sausage Race and leading the crowd through a rousing rendition of Take Me Out to the Ball Game.
Limbaugh: Oh, I’m organizing the Sausage Race, huh? I’m leading Take Me Out to the Ball Game? Listen, buddy, I’m not organizing any races and I’m not leading any singing. And, you aren’t on First. I’m not on First, either. If I were on First, I’d quit, because this team sucks and is losing the big games.
Democrats/Media: Fight!! Fight!! Clear the benches!!!
Steele: Look, I didn’t mean any disrespect. I’m still on First, but I’d just like to say that the Sausage Race is very important part of things around here, as is the singing, and you do a very good job with both of…
Limbaugh: I’m NOT organizing the Sausage Race or singing!!! [To sausages:] Okay, Sausages…On your mark…Get set…Go!!!! [To crowd:] Now, everybody sing with me….Take Me Out to the Ball Game!
Public: I Don’t Give a Damn Who’s on First or What’s organizing the Sausage Race and I Don’t Know who is leading the singing, I just want to know why a hotdog costs $7.50 and a stinking beer costs $10 at this ballpark!
