Joe Biden Describes to Seniors How Health Care Reform Will Affect Them.

I wasn’t quite sure what to think when I read this ABCNews.com report from Friday titled, Vice President Biden to Step Up Role in White House Health Care Reform Push.

Several thoughts jumped to mind, all at once.

First, is that, if I were cynical, I would think this was an attempt by the White House to move the discussion away from “It is racist to oppose the President!/No, it isn’t!”  Joe Biden is about as white bread as you get and I doubt very seriously you are going to see too many posters of a witch doctor with Joe Biden’s head attached to them at any future Health Care Reform protests (if you don’t know what I mean, you can see what I’m talking about here).  (Note: I didn’t say that moving the debate back to Health Care Reform would be a Bad Thing.  I do think it would be a crass political ploy to do so in this manner, though.)

Second, if I were cynical, I would also think that this might also be a fairly obvious attempt to try and build some support amongst the Geritol set by having ‘one of their own’ out there pressing the flesh.  Lots of older folks are worried about how the Democrats plans for Health Care Reform are going to impact Medicare, especially since much of the cost savings that is supposed to pay for the reforms will, apparently, come from ‘squeezing out the inefficiencies’ in Medicare.  I would guess that Joe Biden, even though he will be enjoying ‘Cadillac’ health care benefits during the rest of his golden years thanks to his VP and/or Congressional benefits package, is just about the best person in the administration to speak to their fears.  At the least, he seems to be the closest to their age bracket.

Last, I couldn’t help but think what the reaction from various parties would be:

• The Left: All right!  It’s about time they let Joe Biden take the fight to the Right!  We need someone would can get things done and we can’t think of anyone better than Joe Biden.
• Joe Biden: All right!  It’s about time they let Joe Biden take the fight to the Right!  We need someone would can get things done and I can’t think of anyone better than Joe Biden.
• The Right: All right!  We were hoping they would let Joe Biden out of his secret bunker!  We need someone who will drop a couple of soundbite bombs to get this thing further off track and we can’t think of anyone better than Joe Biden.
• The Media:  All right!  You never know what’s going to come out of Joe’s mouth.  If we get lucky, he’ll pull a major “Biden” and we can milk it for another week or two!
• Concerned Citizens Who Want Reasonable and Effective Health Care Reform: &@#$^*!  We thought Nancy Pelosi was bad enough, now we’ve got to listen to this guy, too?!?  When are these clowns going to stop messing around and get something done that won’t break the bank?

At the least, Joe Biden’s increased public involvement should be entertaining.

Laughter is the best medicine, or so it is said.  If that’s true, Joe’s increased involvement in the Health Care Reform debate might make all of us feel a little bit better!
