Last Friday, Jerome Blanchett, of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, decided to perform a little armed robbery.

He had a great plan: go to the Holiday Inn-Harrisburg East, wait in the bathroom for someone to enter, rob them, and then slip away, like the early morning mist.

Well, that was the plan.


But as the saying goes, the best laid plans of mice and men often go awry.

Mr. Blanchett failed to notice that the Holiday Inn-Harrisburg East was hosting a conference for the Pennsylvania Narcotic Officers’ Association.  A conference that had approximately 300 police officers attending.

Mr. Blanchett actually carried out the robbery, but that is when his plans went astray.  The person he chose to rob was John Comparetto, a retired lieutenant from the New York Police Department.

Blanchett robbed him at gun point in a men’s room, then forced him to drop his pants to his ankles, and fled.  Mr. Comparetto, presumably while pulling up his troughsers, took a handgun from his ankle holster and gave chase.

Mr. Blanchett was surprised when, as he tried to enter a taxi outside the hotel to flee, Mr. Comparetto and other officers ran out after him, weapons drawn.

“He’s yelling, ‘Don’t shoot me,’ and I said, ‘If you move your hands, I’ll kill you,’” Comparetto said. “He was almost crying.”

Mr. Blanchett is being held on a $1 million dollar bond and charge with “robbery charges along with charges of making terroristic threats, reckless endangerment, simple assault, carrying a firearm without a license and illegally possessing a firearm.”  These charges join the four previous robbery charges for which Mr. Blanchett was already awaiting trial.

Ah, I just love a happy ending, don’t you?
