Democratic Election ‘Penalty’ Starts Taking Shape?
Yesterday, I ran a bit on President Obama’s interview with ABC News’ Jake Tapper, in which the President said, “penalties are appropriate for people who try to free ride the system and force others to pay for their health insurance.”
In the closing of that post I said:
I think that the President is right, though: there will be a penalty to be paid.
It will come due next November.
Unfortunately, I think that it will come at the expense of Moderate forces in the Congress and it will leave us with an even more polarized and ineffectual legislative body in Washington.
If that does happen, Democrats will have no one to blame but themselves.
They shouldn’t have sold us on apples and tried to deliver oranges.
Or more often, lemons.
Hey, look!
A new Gallup poll was released today.
Its title?
Republicans Edge Ahead of Democrats in 2010 Vote.
The Democrats are pretty much still voting for Democrats, as are the Republicans. The big switch is the Independent voters, who are now lean towards the Republican candidates in their district by a 52% to 30% margin.
True, the election is just under a year away, but unless they can find the center of the political spectrum – and find it fast – I think the Democratic party is going to face some real backlash next November.
I think many Independents voted Democrat in the last couple of election cycles to balance out the Republican control of the White House.
Now that Democrats control both the White House and the Congress, I think those same Independents are going to be a lot quicker to put the kibosh on what appears to be a sudden lurch to the left, especially on issues such as taxes, the deficit, and spending.
What will happen next November?
Who the heck knows!
It should, however, be a very interesting election cycle!
