Arlen Spector Imitates Diana Ross

Arlen Spector
Arlen Spector did his take on Diana Ross by singing “I’m Coming Out” and switching to the Democratic Party.
“I now find my political philosophy more in line with Democrats than Republicans,” Specter said in a statement posted on a Web site devoted to Pennsylvania politics and confirmed by his office. Several Senate officials said a formal announcement was expected later in the day or Wednesday.
Assuming that one time funny man* Democrat Al Franken is able to secure the open Senate seat in Minnesota, the Democrats will have a 60 vote, filibuster proof majority in the Senate. One has to assume Franken’s opponent, (former?) Senator (and future spokesman for Bright Smile?) Norm Coleman will be given lots of encouragement by the GOP to take his challenges all the way to the SCOTUS.
Spector is was facing a very tough primary challenge from former Representative Pat Toomey, so there seems to be more than a little bit of CYA involved in his switch.
I have mixed feelings about Spector’s change, though. On the one hand, it removes yet another moderate voice in the GOP. On the other, it adds a moderate voice to the Democratic Party.
I guess we’ll call it a draw?
Specter says he’s switching from GOP to Dems.
*By “one time funny man”, I don’t mean that he is no longer a comedian. I mean that Al Franken is a man, who was funny, one time, a long time ago. I think it was the 70s.
